Meet the Underwoods – a travelling family of four living full-time on the road in their 2021 SRC-22F. Shane and Aliesha have been together for 13 years and married for 6. They hit the road in March 2024 with their two boys, Aston (4) and Archer (2), chasing quality time, slow mornings, and ever-changing backyards.
So far, they’ve travelled through QLD, NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, and are currently stationed in WA – loving every minute of van life and the memories we’re making along the way.
Their Home on Wheels? The SRC-22F
We stumbled across our SRC-22F on Marketplace, being sold by another young family. As soon as we stepped inside, we knew it was the right choice. It ticked all the boxes: within our budget, but still felt so lush and well-designed. It felt like home from the start, and we haven’t looked back since.
The space and layout work perfectly for our young family. The boys love their bunk area, and we love having our own bedroom with doors we can close at night! The storage is amazing (a must with kids), and the modern finishes make it feel like home.
What travel destinations would you always go back to?
South Australia really surprised us with its rugged coastlines and friendly towns – Browns Bay was one of our favourite free camps. Mountview Farm Stay in Townsville, QLD, was the best low-cost Hipcamp we’ve found. We stayed twice for a total of 15 nights – it had such a relaxed, welcoming vibe that made it hard to leave. And Esperance, WA? Absolutely unforgettable. The beaches, the vibe, the nature – we’d move there in a heartbeat if it weren’t so far from our family in NZ and QLD. It’s one of those places that stays with you.
What’s your favourite thing about family caravanning
Travelling with kids isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely worth it. Watching our boys grow, learn, and explore new places is something we’ll treasure forever. They’ve adapted quickly, learning road safety, staying close to the van, and embracing the little routines of life on the road. It’s about slowing down, ditching routine, and giving them a childhood full of adventure and connection. We’ve met so many amazing people and made friendships that already feel like family – the road community is truly something special.
How did you and your family get into caravanning?
Travel has always been a huge part of our relationship – we built our life together exploring the world, and it was important to us that our boys grew up with that same sense of adventure built into their blood. For our 4th wedding anniversary, we hired a caravan for the first time and completely fell in love with the lifestyle. From that moment, we set a goal to own our own van and hit the road by our 5th anniversary – and we made it happen. What started as a dream is now our everyday reality.
